Cillian Murphy (pronounced Kill-ian) was born on May 25th, 1976 in Douglas, Cork, Ireland. He is 5’9”, has brown hair, and striking blue eyes. Cillian, nicknamed Cilly, married Yvonne McGuinness in August 2004. Murphy proposed to her while walking the hills of Ireland. They had their first son together. Young Malachy was born on December 4th, 2005. Cillian is presently known to be living in London, England. Aside from his mother and father, Cillian’s family consists of two sisters and a brother. His father is a school inspector while his mother is a French teacher. His brother, Páidi, is a design engineer. Murphy’s sisters are Orla and Sile. Cillian is the oldest of all his siblings.
Many musical artists influenced Cillian when he was younger. Murphy used to play guitar in a band called Sons of Mr. Greengenes.
Cillian was studying law at University College Cork (UCC) before he drifted into acting. Prior to attending UCC, he went to Presentation Brothers College in Cork. At UCC, Cillian starred on stage in Observe The Sons of Ulster Marching Towards The Somme. This led to his professional stage work for Disco Pigs. He toured all over with Disco Pigs in 1996. When he arrived back to UCC he left to pursue his acting career in further speciality.
Acting as Pig in Disco Pigs definitely was Cillian’s big break. It was such a success on the stage that it was made into a film in 2001. Other films he’s done are: On the Edge, Bitter Harvest, 28 Days Later, Intermission, Girl with a Pearl Earring, Batman Begins, Red Eye, Breakfast on Pluto, and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. To check out the rest of his films, go to the Filmography page. Big hits that came over to North America resulted in bringing him international fame. The movies that brought on this fame were playing Jim in 28 Days Later (2002), Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow in Batman Begins (2005), Jackson Rippner in Red Eye (2005), and Patrick “Kitten” Braden in Breakfast on Pluto (2005). Although these movies brought him a taste of American fame, he still produces European movies and remains to be himself.
Cillian's Palme d'Or winning film The Wind That Shakes the Barley is still being relaeased into theatres. His next film to be released is Sunshine, which will be seen in March 2007. Following this theatrical release will be Watching the Detectives -- a first romantic comedy for him. Telepathy is another film Cillian will be doing this year. Not too much is knows about it so keep your eyes open!
This winter Cillian's attention will be in London. He is doing a play called Love Song. His character is Beane and sounds quite funny. I assure it will be a success. Keep it up Cillian!
